Ford Barra: what the engine asks of an ECU

The Barra is Ford Australia's turbo-friendly 4.0 litre inline six. Both cams are variable on the engines covered here, and each cam has its own sensor.

Early engines differ, so check yours against the notes on each variant.

Where this comes from

Some items on this page are cited from Wikipedia and from ECU manufacturers such as Haltech, not from the engine's maker. Each row names its source, and a † marks a row that is crowdsourced. Always check your specific sensors and manuals where you have them.

A figure like 58x is pulses per crank revolution from one sensor. It is a rate, not a sensor count, and it does not say whether the sensor is VR or Hall. The planner reads sensor type, cam sensor count and variable cams from the cited text. Where the text does not settle one, the row says so: check your sensor.

Variants

Barra 4.0 NA (182/190/195)

Engine
6 cylinders, inline layout1
Aspiration
Naturally aspirated1
Fuel injection
Port injection, sequential1
Ignition
COP, dumb coils (external igniter needed)1
Crank trigger
36-1 VR1
Cam trigger
VR 3+1 on each cam (intake and exhaust)2
Cams and variable timing
2 camshafts; variable timing: 2 (DIPS dual-independent (Barra 190 and 195; the 182 differs))1
Firing order
1-5-3-6-2-41
Factory ECU
Bosch (ME9/EMS)1
Notes
Dual independent cam timing from the Barra 190 (2005). The 2002 Barra 182 differs, so check yours. The factory coils are dumb and need an external igniter.1

Factory ECU
Bosch (ME9/EMS)1
Notes
Factory single turbo. Lower compression (8.4 to 8.9:1). Both cams are variable, with independent cam timing. Trigger, firing order and coils are the same as the NA Barra. The factory coils are dumb and need an external igniter.2
